EMORY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 04/05/1870

WILLIAM H. EMORY. ALS: "Very truly yrs/W.H. Emory", 7p, 7¾x10. Fort McPherson, Nebraska, 1870 April 5. To Major John M. Gould. In part: "I have not with me any papers or words of the 19th Army Corps and cannot give you the exact figures of Div & Brigades brought into the field at Winchester on the 19th of Sept 1864, but I will give you in a few words the exact movement of the two Divisions of the Corps on that day...The evening of the 18th when in Camp near Berrysville on the south side of the Opequon we were ordered to move at two oClock in the morning in the following order, 1st the Sixth Corps followed by its train 2d the 19h corps followed by its train, 3d Eighth corps. The whole of the Infantry to be moved under the orders of Gen'l Wright. At two A.M. of the 19th, the 19th A.C. moved precisely on time. I, with my staff at the Head of the Column, was not long in striking the Berryville pike, leading to the crossing of the Opequon. It was not yet dark, and I could not see whether the 6th Corps had passed, or was marching on our flank. I therefore continued on, but it was not long before an A.D.C. of Genl Wright, overhauled me and gave me a preemptory order to halt. Soon Genl Wright himself came up with his staff and we all halted in the roar, for the 6th Corps to come up, which was not until early dawn. I called Genl Wright's attention to the order allowing the train of his corps (the sixth) to pass in front of the 19th. He stated that was the order and it must be obeyed. It was not until the sun was up that I was permitted under my orders to move and my company was then constantly stopt (sic) by Wright's wagons. In the meantime the firing of small arms in front became very lively, and occasional salvos of artillery, and it was evident that the Cavalry, which was in front under Gen'l Sheridan himself had encountered serious opposition in the defile... GIAN CARLO MENOTTI - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/04/1966 .

GIAN CARLO MENOTTI - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/04/1966?GIAN CARLO MENOTTI Handwritten postcard to reporter Leonard Lyons, referencing "old Sarnoff" Autograph Letter signed: "Gian Carlo", 5¾3¾ postcard, addressed in his hand on verso to Leonard Lyons, c/o The New York Post, postmarked New York, N. Y., October 4, 1966. In full: "Do let me know what was old Sarnoff's reaction to your mention of the Amahl affair. Or did you forget to mention it to him?" Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007, born in Cadegliano, Italy), who worked mainly in the U.S., was a classically trained writer of operas who strived to make his works accessible to untrained audiences. The Consul (1950) won the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Award. Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951) was the first opera written for TV and still runs annually at Christmas time. Preparing for a 2000 Kennedy Center production of The Consul, a tale of revolutionaries and refugees appealing for asylum to indifferent diplomats, Menotti lamented that this 50-year old work was as timely as ever. The reference to "old Sarnoff" is cryptic but intriguing. It could refer to media mogul David Sarnoff (1891-1971), the powerful head of RCA and the founder of NBC; or Dorothy Sarnoff (1914-2008), opera and musical theater soprano who had performed in Menotti's operas but who by 1966 had become an influential (and expensive) image consultant (to clients who would include Jimmy Carter and Menachem Begin). Toned. Paper clip impression at top edge. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition. For more information contact HistoryForSale. DOCUMENT 297310
