WILLIAM H. EMORY. ALS: "Very truly yrs/W.H. Emory", 7p, 7¾x10. Fort McPherson, Nebraska, 1870 April 5. To Major John M. Gould. In part: "I have not with me any papers or words of the 19th Army Corps and cannot give you the exact figures of Div & Brigades brought into the field at Winchester on the 19th of Sept 1864, but I will give you in a few words the exact movement of the two Divisions of the Corps on that day...The evening of the 18th when in Camp near Berrysville on the south side of the Opequon we were ordered to move at two oClock in the morning in the following order, 1st the Sixth Corps followed by its train 2d the 19h corps followed by its train, 3d Eighth corps. Soon Genl Wright himself came up with his staff and we all halted in the roar, for the 6th Corps to come up, which was not until early dawn. I called Genl Wright's attention to the order allowing the train of his corps (the sixth) to pass in front of the 19th. He stated that was the order and it must be obeyed. It was not until the sun was up that I was permitted under my orders to move and my company was then constantly stopt (sic) by Wright's wagons. In the meantime the firing of small arms in front became very lively, and occasional salvos of artillery, and it was evident that the Cavalry, which was in front under Gen'l Sheridan himself had encountered serious opposition in the defile...
