GIAN CARLO MENOTTI - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/04/1966?GIAN CARLO MENOTTI Handwritten postcard to reporter Leonard Lyons, referencing "old Sarnoff" Autograph Letter signed: "Gian Carlo", 5¾3¾ postcard, addressed in his hand on verso to Leonard Lyons, c/o The New York Post, postmarked New York, N. Y., October 4, 1966. In full: "Do let me know what was old Sarnoff's reaction to your mention of the Amahl affair. Or did you forget to mention it to him?" Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007, born in Cadegliano, Italy), who worked mainly in the U.S., was a classically trained writer of operas who strived to make his works accessible to untrained audiences. The Consul (1950) won the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Award. Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951) was the first opera written for TV and still runs annually at Christmas time. Preparing for a 2000 Kennedy Center production of The Consul, a tale of revolutionaries and refugees appealing for asylum to indifferent diplomats, Menotti lamented that this 50-year old work was as timely as ever. The reference to "old Sarnoff" is cryptic but intriguing. It could refer to media mogul David Sarnoff (1891-1971), the powerful head of RCA and the founder of NBC; or Dorothy Sarnoff (1914-2008), opera and musical theater soprano who had performed in Menotti's operas but who by 1966 had become an influential (and expensive) image consultant (to clients who would include Jimmy Carter and Menachem Begin).
